Before I joined I was well aware of what Crossfit was, but I still scoured the Internet before I signed up for my first free class.
I was looking for things like results, before and after pictures and I guess I was kinda wondering if I would die doing the work outs.
Let me also tell you that if you have your heart set on elipticals and swimming pools you are probably in the wrong place.
However if you are looking for proven, effective, ass kicking workouts that get results then you are on the right page.
Here’s the challenge I faced before signing up.
There’s too many gyms in this town to choose from, even when you do it’s only a matter of time before you get tired of the same old routine.
I hate thinking of new programs to do, or forget about what I am doing for the next 6-8 weeks I don’t want to think about what I’m doing that day
Working out with a partner is ideal, but I don’t know anyone yet, and finding a good partner is a pain in the ass.
I hate not being able to use equipment because it’s too packed, or there’s some idiot in the way hurling barbells around trying to be macho.
Memberships are expensive, but the staff is a bunch of snobs who always try and sell me stuff.
It’s easy to get stuck in my “comfort zone.”
Maybe you feel like weights are intimidating so you’re afraid to push yourself.
Or you want the personal training and instruction but don’t want the big price tag.
This pretty much sums up what I was thinking before I joined Crossfit Hoboken. Now my level of fitness was another story…
“I Sat Behind a Computer Screen for 8-9 Hours a day, Drinking Plenty of Coffee and Booze and Exercising Little..”
The only good thing going for me was that I was riding a bike to and from the train station every day, well that was only a 5 minute ride so I guess it was better than nothing. I also went out on 20-30 mile bike rides a couple times a year and if I felt like it I’d do some push ups and pull ups from time to time.
In short, my exercise habits were none existent, and to top it off I ate a sausage egg and cheese for breakfast everyday.
I wasn’t a fat ass, but if I continued like this for another 10, 20, or 30 years I would definitely have some serious health risks.
Fortunately I moved closer to Hoboken where I work, and was able to cut my almost 3 hour daily commute down to about 25 minutes total. This got me back in the gym.
When I started looking around I was only after 1 thing. Results, but I still had plenty of options to choose from.
For starters there was the itsy bitsy little gym in my building, then there was Club H, CKO Kick Boxing, Crossfit, or LA Boxing.
A couple dudes in my office go to LA Boxing, and get good results, 1 lost a good 40 lbs, but he doesn’t look healthy in my opinion, but the weight loss was impressive, none the less.
Club H is definitely pretty and they do a good job promoting themselves. I see them in my building with special offers going after the corporate folks so I knew I could use that and get a decent deal.
The place is gorgeous but I was familiar with the treadmill and free weight routine, and didn’t want to go down that road again. But it’s really convenient.
Crossfit, LA Boxing and CKO were all new to me so I decided I would give each one a trial run and take it from there.
I put my name into the Crossfit Hoboken site, and a coach named Bennett called me back. I went for a free workout and from there…
“I Knew This Was the Place for Me”
I wasn’t looking to pack on size like I was when I was 20, which was the best shape I was in previously. I also wasn’t looking for just a cardio workout either, I needed some weights, and I know that things like bench, squat, and deadlift are critical but a huge pain in the ass to do at most gyms.
I actually think they are frowned upon in most commercial gyms, but anyway…
The free workout kicked my ass, but I felt great after.
I went to about 4 free workouts prior to starting my fundamentals class on July 12th, 2010.
Here’s why Crossfit Rocks!
It’s like working out w/ a partner, but each workout is like it’s own
mini-event without competitive douchebags
Professional Coaches watching you and critiquing your form
The 2 Week Fundamentals Class gets you proficient with core and Olympic lifts
so you can finally start getting the results you are after because you are building a muscular foundation.
Most important the Caveman or Paleo Diet is easy to follow. As you know working out will get you stronger and faster but diet is what makes you slim down and look sexy. I never feel starved or tired and best yet I eat bacon if I feel like it. Holler!
You get a free Work out tracking system that’s easy to use so you can track your progress week after week month after month
Let me also remind you…
This is way more cost efficient than going to a trainer
You won’t get sport specific training but you will get athletic. Very athletic.
Crossfit gives you:
-Cardio-respiritory endurance
-Stamina
-Strength
-Flexibility
-Power
-Speed
-Coordination
-Accuracy
-Agility
-Balance
Workouts are as short as 8 minutes
There’s tons of variety, you will never have to think about what you are doing that day.
So here’s the deal, I’m no expert, and there are definitely people out there who are stronger and faster than me, but I bet I’ve done more with myself in the past several months than 95% of the people out there in “regular gyms”
So does this work?
I’d say so.
Here’s a pic of me when I started in July 2010
Here’s what I looked like about 15 weeks later.
Yeah yeah, for the skeptics the lighting in the first pic is kinda bad, and in the second it’s a little better, but when I first got the belt I am wearing in the pic I wore in the in second hole. In the picture I am wearing in the 4th hole, so I dropped 2 sizes for whatever it’s worth.
Definitely a big improvement.

Most people will show up for a free work out and decide from there.
Let me warn you that this is not for everyone.
What I like about Crossfit is that it’s not about signing up as many people as possible hoping that you show up a couple times a month and just keep paying. Kinda like how banks lend out way more money than they have on hand.
Crossfit has a different model, there’s 5 classes a day with enough room for 20 people or so. This is about results.
If you daydream of fancy treadmills, heart rate calculators, Zumba and Spin classes, this isn’t for you.
You can do nothing and keep on getting the same results, or you can step up, challenge yourself and do something different.
For many people the pain of change will always be more painful
than there current problems
All it takes is a decision to turn things around.
In my case I was not exercising regularly and as a matter of
fact even though I was like 15-20 lbs over weight, I was
predicted to be over 60% at risk for things like
diabetes and heart disease in old age because I was
not eating right or exercising
There’s an old saying
Discipline weighs ounces but regret weighs pounds.
You can click off this page and not do anything, or you
can take your fitness to a whole new level.
Doesn’t matter if you’re out of shape or a gym rat
Crossfit will kick your ass and you’ll have a great
time doing it.
